Dan Mason, who led Central to a 44-108 record in six seasons, has resigned from his position as men's basketball coach at Central. Mason informed the team of his decision Wednesday afternoon.

“I'd like to thank (athletic director) Al Dorenkamp, (president) Dr. (David) Roe and the administration for all the support they have given to myself and my family for the last six years," Mason said. “I'd also like to thank the young men who have represented Central College and our basketball program during my time here.

“I am disappointed I was unable to provide the leadership that would allow the team to reach the championship level. But while disappointed, I have no regrets regarding my interactions with the students under my care, with others at the college, nor with those in the Pella community."

“We have appreciated the effort and loyalty Dan Mason has provided Central College and our men's basketball players the past six years,” athletic director Al Dorenkamp said. “Dan has been a role model for our student-athletes and he has the qualities and talents to be successful in his future endeavors."

A native of Chicago, Mason is a graduate of North Park, where he was a standout baseball pitcher, earning NCAA Div. III all-American honors in 1983. He was inducted into the North Park College Hall of Fame in 1988.

Dorenkamp said the search for Mason's replacement will begin immediately.

“We hope to have the position filled in the next few weeks,” he said.

Central has won 15 Iowa Conference men's basketball titles, the most recent coming in 1994-95.
