ASTON, Pa. – Five players reached double-figure scoring as the No. 10 ranked Cabrini College men's basketball team improved to 3-1 on the season with today's 81-60 neutral site victory over Widener University. The game was the second of a triple-header for the 2012 Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Neumann University's Mirenda Center.
Junior Fran Rafferty led the Cavaliers with a game-high 22 points, connecting on a career best 6-8 from three point range. Fellow junior Jon Miller knocked down 6-7 shot attempts en route to a career high 12 points off the bench. Freshman Arron Goodman tallied his third double-double in four career games with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The Pride held the Blue and White scoreless for nearly the first four minutes of action, building an early 8-0 lead but freshman Brad Fagan's three pointer at the 16:07 mark sent the Cavaliers on a 21-2 run, establishing 21-10 lead with 10:33 to play in the opening half.
Widener cut Cabrini's lead back to four points before a Miller tip-in sent the Cavaliers on a 10-0 run. A lay-up by senior DeLeon Floyd extended the Blue and White's lead to 36-22 with 4:15 left in the opening half. A lay-up by Widener's Rob McPerson at the buzzer sent the teams into the halftime break with the Cavaliers leading 38-30.
Cabrini immediately extended its lead to open the second half as Rafferty and senior Jeremy Knowles connected on threes while Goodman finished a lay-up, giving Cabrini a 46-30 lead.
Widener managed to cut its deficit down to eight points a few times in the second half, but another Rafferty three sparked a Blue and White 16-5 run late in the game, extending its lead to 74-54 with 2:38 to play.
The Cavaliers continued to dominate its opponents on the glass, outrebounding the Pride 56-36, including 21 offensive rebounds. Miller and senior Goran Dulac grabbed eight boards each, including five offensive rebounds for each.
Senior A.J. Williams added six rebounds to his 10 points, seven assists and three steals on the night. Knowles tallied 10 points off the bench for the Blue and White.
The Blue and White held Widener (0-3) to just 38.5% shooting from the floor, connecting on only two of its 17 three point attempts in the loss. McPerson led the Pride with 14 points, while Rodney Brown chipped in with 12 off the bench.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to the University of Scranton to face the No. 18 Royals in a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament Elite Eight meeting. The action is scheduled to tip at 8:00 p.m. following the women's tilt.
