Thomas More Rallies to Defeat Bethany, 82-74, in Overtime

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - The Thomas More College men's basketball team rallied from an eight-point second half deficit to defeat Bethany College, 82-74, in overtime tonight (January 22, 2014) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.

With the win, the Saints improve to 7-10 overall and 6-2 in the PAC. With the loss, the Bison fall to 13-4 overall and 6-2 in the PAC.

Bethany jumped out to a 21-17 lead with 9:01 to play in the first half when Darrian Bruster made a lay-up with 9:01 to play in the first half. Thomas More answered with a 14-5 run to take a 31-26 lead on a three-pointer by senior guard D'Carlo Hayes (Louisville, Ky./Male) with 4:24 to play in the first half. Bethany closed out the half on a 12-4 run capped by a two free-throws by Delonte' Joyce with 33-seconds to play in the half to take a 38-35 halftime lead.

Thomas More opened the second half on a 16-9 run to take a 51-47 lead with 14:45 to play in regulation when Hayes made a three-pointer. Bethany answered with an 18-6 run to take its biggest lead of the game at 65-57 when Joyce made a lay-up with 7:49 to play in the second half. Undaunted, the Saints responded with a 13-3 lead to take a 70-68 lead with 1:17 to play in the regulation when junior guard Eliot Pipes (Nashville, Tenn./Hillsboro) made a jumper. Bethany's Lawrence Weldon made two free-throws with four-seconds to play in regulation to tie the game at 70-70 and force overtime.

In overtime, the Saints out-scored the Bison, 12-4, to win the game, 82-74.

Junior guard/forward Drew Mumford (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy) scored a game-high 17 points to lead six Saints in double-figure scoring. Joining him in double-figures was Hayes with 15, junior forward Jalen Clark (Frankfort, Ky./Western Hills) and Pipes with 12 each, senior forward Brandon Housley (Covington, Ky./Holmes) with 11 and freshman guard/forward Nate McGovney (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) with 10. Housley and Hayes led the team on the boards with six rebounds each, while Mumford led the team in assists with six.

Thomas More will return to action on Saturday (January 25) was it hosts Grove City College at 3 p.m. at the Connor Convocation Center.
