Marietta bombs the Bearcats winning Shrine Tournament crown

MARIETTA, Ohio — Tim Kreeger was nearly unstoppable in the paint as the sophomore led Marietta College to a dominating 115-68 win over Saint Vincent College Saturday (Nov. 17) in the championship game of the 48th annual Marietta Shrine Tournament sponsored by BSN Sports and Best Western Plus.

Marietta improves to 4-0 on the season, while Saint Vincent slips to 3-1 overall. In the consolation game, La Roche (1-1 overall) defeated Wesley (0-3) by the score of 91-80.

Kreeger connected on 11-of-12 from the floor and finished with a game-high 24 points to earn All-Tournament honors. Anthony Wallace was named the Cliff Rose Most Valuable Player after scoring 16 points and pulling down five rebounds.

Kyle Matoszkia added 10 points and five boards, while Kyle Dixon chipped in with five points and a game-high seven rebounds. Jason Ellis earned All-Tournament honors after scoring eight points to go along with his team-high 26 from MC's first round win against La Roche.

The Bearcats had five players in double figures. Tom Kromka and David Stephen earned All-Tournament honors after scoring 12 and 10 points, respectively. Josh Duda finished with 12 points, while Ryan Dutton and Tom Neugebauer each tallied 11 points.

Matoszkia hit a jumper with 14:36 left in the first half to give Marietta a 10-point lead, 16-6. The Pioneers maintained the double-digit lead the rest of the way pushing the margin as high as 49 points, 115-66, in the final seconds of the game.

16 different Pioneers scored in the game as head coach Jon VanderWal cleared his bench with several minutes left in the game. Marietta shot a sizzling 62.5% (45-of-72) from the floor, including 60.9% (14-of-23) behind the arc.

Marietta is back in action on Tuesday (Nov. 20) when the Pioneers host Frostburg State University. Tip off in Ban Johnson Arena is set for 7 p.m.
